Lecture on Conodonts

Tutor: Dr. Tea Kolar-Jurkovšek, Geological Survey of Slovenia (Email: tea.kolar-jurkovsek@geo-zs.si)

Date: 14-21 November 2024

Venue: Central Department of Geology, Kirtipur

Background

The Central Department of Geology, Tribhuvan University, hosted an eight-day laboratory workshop on microfossils, focusing on conodonts, from November 14 to November 21, 2024. The workshop was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Tea Kolar-Jurkovšek from the Geological Survey of Slovenia. Conodonts, an extinct group of jawless vertebrates, are significant in understanding biostratigraphy and paleoenvironmental reconstruction, making this workshop a valuable opportunity for advancing academic and research expertise in paleontology.

Introduction

The workshop aimed to provide hands-on experience in identifying and studying conodont microfossils and their applications in geological studies. It included laboratory activities, an introductory presentation, and a field excursion, catering to both theoretical and practical learning for MSc Geology students.

Activities

1. Workshop Sessions

The workshop sessions ran from November 14 to 21, 2024, involving more than 10 MSc Geology students. During these sessions, participants engaged in laboratory techniques for extracting and identifying conodont elements. The discussions focused on their geological significance and applications in stratigraphy, providing students with in-depth practical knowledge and skills.

2. Presentation

On November 18, 2024, a presentation titled "Introduction on Conodonts" was held, attended by over 30 students from the 2nd and 4th semesters. The presentation covered an overview of conodont morphology, taxonomy, and their role in geological studies. This interactive session concluded with a Q&A segment that allowed participants to delve deeper into the topic.

3. Excursion

An excursion to the Phulchoki area in Kathmandu took place on November 19, 2024. This field activity included 3 professors and 7 students. The excursion focused on observing the field occurrence of sedimentary rocks associated with microfossils and discussing their geological context within Nepal. The hands-on experience in a natural setting complemented the laboratory and theoretical components of the workshop.

Outcomes

The workshop significantly enhanced the practical knowledge of students in identifying conodonts and understanding their stratigraphy applications. Through hands-on activities and engaging discussions, participants gained valuable insights into conodont-based biostratigraphy, equipping them with skills relevant to both research and academic pursuits. The field excursion to the Phulchoki area provided a practical perspective, enriching students’ comprehension of local geology and its connection to microfossil studies.

Additionally, the event strengthened collaboration between Tribhuvan University and international experts in paleontology, fostering opportunities for future academic exchange.
